Nature is the greater flow of time that continues beyond human intention.
The shifting of light, the presence of wind, the sound of water, the texture of materials, the contours of the land, the changing seasons, and the transformations brought by the passing years.
These are found not only in mountains and seas, but flow continuously through cities and everyday life.
Nature is not merely something to be observed, but the ceaseless movement of the world itself.

Architecture is a place in which people live.
It embraces the aspirations of each individual and the conditions of their lives, supporting the activities of the everyday.
Architecture emerges when the character of a place and human activity are brought together through materials, joints, boundaries, and spatial sequences as a single experience.

Within architecture, people pause and encounter the time of nature.
In that moment, memories of the past and the present overlap, and the contours of life emerge.

In recent years, the increasing formalisation and simplification of funeral ceremonies, together with the flood of information that stimulates the desires surrounding our daily lives, seem to have rapidly widened the distance between everyday life and death.

This was also something sensed by the chief priest, who commissioned us to design a small hall for holding wakes. With the increase in elderly people living alone and the spread of nuclear families, he felt that the local community once centred around the long-standing temple was gradually becoming weaker year by year.

In this project, while creating a place for holding wakes, we also considered what might become the beginning of a renewed local community. This led us to the idea of creating, in a fundamental sense, “a place of prayer for life and death.”

To face the deceased at a wake, that is, to face death, is also to face one’s memories of the deceased and one’s own life. It naturally becomes an act of looking back at one’s own way of living.

In other words, through death we are led toward life, and from life again toward death. A cycle emerges in which we reflect on our existence and on life itself. By allowing this cycle to continue, we may be able to truly cherish others, things, landscapes, memories, and ourselves.

This feeling seems to be connected to the beginning of everyday communication, such as exchanging greetings with someone or offering a helping hand. We thought that beyond such small, ordinary interactions, a new community could gradually begin to emerge.

With these thoughts on “a place of prayer for life and death” in a fundamental sense, we worked together with architects, furniture makers, metalworkers, landscape architects, many other craftspeople, and the client, a religious practitioner, to create a quiet space in which people could face both life and death.

In Buddhism, the octagon is said to symbolise the whole universe and the centre of the world. By placing the structure of an octagon within a square volume, we attempted to create what might be called a centre of the world, where the deceased and the self could face one another.

The radial walls forming the octagon, which also function as structural walls, define the centre of the space while supporting the entire hall. The remaining spaces, enclosed by non-structural walls, are arranged to accommodate the necessary functions.

The materials were chosen for their ability to act upon the senses and for their closeness to nature: chestnut wood carrying Buddhist associations, sand-finished plaster ceilings and walls that draw in light richly, and a floor finished with sen tiles, which gives the space a visual sense of weight. These elements were composed to form a moderate and quiet background.

At the centre of the space, the deceased lies on a bier. Close family and friends sit on chairs around it, spending their final moments with the deceased in contemplation.

While considering the quality of feeling and the form of space appropriate to this condition, we sought to give the hall a quiet order for facing “the death of another and one’s own life.” This was achieved through the radial walls and the beams that connect them, openings that control light in layers, the integration of horizontal and vertical dimensional systems, and the adjustment of the spatial centre of gravity.

**

Bishamondo and the main hall that form the temple precinct.

Centred on these “places of prayer for life and death,” the shaded spaces beneath the eaves and the garden planned to connect the precinct as a whole have begun to gently receive the surrounding environment and the people who live there.

Children run vividly through the spaces between life and death.

Elderly people walk while looking at the plants in the garden. When they meet someone, greetings are exchanged naturally. In such moments, one senses the beginning of a small community.

To quietly face the “life and death” that each person carries, and to place one’s hands together in prayer. At the same time, to allow the surrounding environment and the activities of daily life to become richer and more connected.

Beyond this, we hope that a clear point of reference will emerge, one from which we may look upon this world with a calm and steady perspective.

The site is part of an old district where houses and fields once coexisted, newly reorganized in response to the expansion of the town.
Although it is located in a relatively quiet area away from the main road, the presence of an adjacent apartment building, together with the likelihood that the surrounding farmland will be developed into residential lots in the near future, led us to consider both the house’s future presence within the townscape and the quality of its living environment.

Many of the surrounding houses are set back from the front road, with carports placed along the street and gardens arranged to the south. This project follows that same basic arrangement. By keeping the height of the house to approximately one and a half storeys, sunlight is maintained for the site behind, while eaves and canopies mediate the relationship between the interior and the street.

The proportions, textures and materials were selected with reference to both the older and newer houses in the neighbourhood. In doing so, the house is intended to become part of a rich local landscape, connecting the old and the new that coexist within the district.

The plan is based on a simple rectangular volume divided into four parts, with a wet-area block attached to one side. Each of the four spaces is given a different floor level, creating a circular movement from the first floor to the second. Around the central void, the individual places are loosely and equivalently connected.

To create a natural continuity between these places, countless invisible lines were overlaid in section. These lines form a dimensional system that integrates the proportions of the spaces, the openings and the finishing lines, creating a sense of wholeness while giving each place its own centre of comfort.

This is similar, in a sense, to music or a novel, where sounds and words are layered to give form to something invisible. Through the connection of countless sectional lines that do not physically exist, the space gains depth, and a quiet order drifts through the whole house like a basso continuo.

By carefully observing light and shadow, lace curtains swaying in the wind, and the movement of trees, the architecture seeks to become a quiet background that gently embraces daily life and offers a place where human emotions can take root.

This café was planned as a connective hub between the civic gymnasium, multi-purpose sports ground and surrounding park.
The proposal was selected through a design competition.

The large roof takes inspiration from kumiko, a traditional Japanese woodworking technique. Its lattice structure allows views, light and activity to pass through, creating a place where the surrounding landscape and public life overlap.

Developed in collaboration with the local forestry cooperative, the roof is made from standard cedar and cypress timber. Each 120 mm-wide board is divided into two members, forming sections of H240 mm × D60 mm. These 1,200 mm-long pieces are assembled in a repetitive lattice, creating a single expansive roof that recalls the precision and lightness of kumiko joinery.

House in Tomisato|

The site is located in a warm region surrounded by open rural landscape.
The clients, a young couple, had been living with three generations of their family in the main house at the rear of the site. With the birth of their child and the beginning of family life, they decided to build a new home on the land in front of it. Rather than severing the relationship with the main house, the project sought to create an independent place with a comfortable distance—one where family and many friends could gather.

The house is composed of two parts: the “stone room”, which contains the wet areas, and the “timber room”, which accommodates the living spaces. The space between them forms the approach to the entrance. By deliberately closing the house towards the main house, the new dwelling is treated as an autonomous presence. At the same time, by guiding visitors into the “stone room”, imagined as a contemporary equivalent of a traditional doma, the threshold of arrival is softened, creating a balance of physical and psychological distance from the main house.

Inside, the living room within the “timber room” forms the centre of the house. Around it, places to dwell—the window bench, landing, dining area and kitchen—are arranged in a concentric manner. The continuity and depth of the interior are shaped by aligning materials, views and ceiling heights across these spaces. Strong light entering through the large south-facing opening is redirected sideways and downward by angled walls, creating a deep pool of shadow within the double-height space and giving the sitting area a calm sense of gravity.

The luminous space that emerges from this arrangement was conceived as a generous centre for family and friends to gather. As the family grows, it is intended to become a quiet place where the memories of daily life slowly take root within the darkness.

The second floor is submerged in shadow through the void above the living room and the slit-like stairwell. This creates a stillness suited to sleep, while gently maintaining an awareness of the first floor below, where light enters.

To allow shadow and the essential simplicity of materials to reside within architecture, I believe it is necessary to continue observing them carefully and honestly.
