「Process of the Works|
Architecture as a Place to Feel the World Deeply
Light and wind, the presence of nature, the texture and touch of materials, temperature, sound, and the passage of time.
When we encounter these small changes in everyday life, our senses gradually begin to open.
We see architecture not simply as something that separates inside from outside, but as a place where various presences pass through and resonate in layers.
As the visible and the invisible, the things that pass through and the things that remain, overlap with one another, space gains a sense of permeable openness.
This openness is shaped by the grain of materials such as wood, stone, earth, and paper, and by the shadows cast by buildings and trees.
It works not only on what is seen, but also on touch and memory.
With a depth that cannot be gained by looking at space alone, the experience slowly permeates the inner senses.
What we value is not a form that asserts itself strongly, but a margin where transparency and permeation quietly overlap with human movement.
We understand this margin not as an empty space, but as a capacity to notice and receive the small changes of nature and place as they unfold over time.
Through this margin, architecture quietly reconnects people with their surroundings, becoming a place where the world can be felt more deeply.

The site is located in a suburban residential area where natural surroundings and houses coexist in a balanced way. The block, however, is relatively compact, with neighbouring houses close by, placing constraints on the way windows could be opened, as well as on sunlight and ventilation. In a regional city, several parking spaces are also required on the street side, and once privacy from the busy front road is taken into account, the position and openness of the house are almost inevitably determined. Such conditions are not unusual in suburban residential areas, yet responding to them directly risked making the house simply another part of a standardized neighbourhood.
We therefore reconsidered the usual design process, in which the building is determined step by step from the external conditions. First, we created a large internal volume that keeps a certain distance from surrounding views and noise, and is not overly affected by the external environment. A volume supported by an even grid and truss structure was formed, with skylights placed around its four sides to fill the interior with soft light. In response to the increasing frequency of heavy rainfall in recent years, the building is raised above the ground, creating an interior space that maintains a measured distance from its surroundings.
Within this enclosed space, we then reconnected the house to the external environment in order to create places of comfort for the body. Functions and rooms are contained within nested volumes separated from the outer walls, and the overall spatial volume was determined while adjusting the dimensions of each part. The passage beneath the skylights rises from the first-floor level, with lattice windows, low windows, desks, bookshelves and the kitchen arranged above and below it. By gently receiving part of the light from the skylights with hanging walls, the space gains depth and shadow, rather than becoming merely bright.
To first distance the house from the external environment, establish an ideal interior, and then reconnect it to the outside through light, wind, views and movement — this became a process of accepting what had initially seemed negative as conditions specific to this place. Within the large volume, light gathers, shadows emerge, and places for the body are gradually found. The house seeks to reconsider the constraints of a suburban residential area, reconstructing its distance from the outside through light, wind and places for the body to dwell.

Nothing new was attempted.
What does balance mean in architecture?
It seems that this was the only question we pursued together with the client.
The architecture that emerged is like a nameless vessel.
There is simply space.
Yet precisely because of this, one can physically sense the rich territory formed between the nature of Izu-Kogen and the architecture. Quiet encounters also arise with the carefully selected vessels and works placed within it.
Like sowing seeds and waiting for new growth, this is a place where emotions that feel both familiar and new can quietly emerge.

The site is located along Kami no Michi, the sacred path that connects Miho no Matsubara, a scenic pine grove, with Miho Shrine. Since its registration as part of the World Cultural Heritage site associated with Mount Fuji, the area has become a destination visited by many tourists from Japan and abroad.
The client, who runs a local bar, approached us with the idea of creating a garden café and residence with a dog run, which could become a new attraction for the area. While the site is highly appealing, it also required careful consideration of how to relate to Kami no Michi, where many people pass each day and large pine trees form a strong linear axis.
Miho no Matsubara is also known for the legend of Hagoromo. Walking through the site, we were struck by the sea breeze passing through the pine grove, the glimpses of sandy beach and blue sea seen between the branches, and the shadows cast by the trunks of the pines. We sought to draw these elements of the landscape into the architecture, receiving the axis of Kami no Michi while gently extending it toward the garden and interior spaces.
The building is enclosed by a repeated arrangement of aluminium sashes, allowing views to pass through from Kami no Michi toward the garden. Except for areas requiring specific functions, privacy, or structural walls, standard-size sashes are repeated vertically and horizontally, and their dimensions determine the floor heights and positions of the openings.
In the café area, some of the column spans are shifted, taking cues from the staggered rhythm of the pine trees. When looking toward the garden from inside the building, the upper parts of the columns disappear from view, drawing the presence of the garden closer to the body. The residential area is also composed as a doorless single-room space enclosed by exterior sashes, allowing light, wind, and the movement of greenery to enter daily life. The plan also leaves room for the building to be flexibly converted in the future into a café, residence, or accommodation facility.
The planting was selected so that the atmosphere gradually softens from the pine-lined axis of Kami no Michi toward the garden terrace.
Sea breeze passes through the continuous openings, trees sway, and lace curtains move quietly in the air. People walking along Kami no Michi are drawn from the pine avenue toward the presence of the garden, approaching the building. Sitting slowly with a cup of coffee, one looks up at the large pine tree that has long stood in this place. The activities of people, the landscape, light, and sea breeze pass through one another, creating a place where they overlap softly, like the drifting movement of Hagoromo.
